Study the capabilities for the Lite version described on this page along with those of the Indigo 4 Pro version to determine which product fits your specific home automation needs. In addition use this Product Comparison Chart for further detail on the Lite versus Pro versions. Indigo 4.1 Pro has ALL functions of Indigo 4 Lite plus a lot more. So if you don’t see some of the functionality you need in your home automation system, be sure and look for it in the Indigo 4 Pro version.

At the bottom of this page you will find the discount upgrade option if you are an existing Indigo 1.x owner and want to move to Indigo 4 Lite. On the Indigo 4 Pro page you will also find an upgrade option to go directly from Indigo 1.8 to Indigo 4 Pro.

Indigo 4 Lite is an intelligent home control server that integrates an assortment of popular X10 and INSTEON hardware devices to provide unprecedented control of your home. Indigo was the first Mac home automation software to support the PowerLinc USB interface which finally offered a Mac home automation solution that did not need costly USB to serial adapters! Using Indigo’s intuitive user interface you can quickly define complex control logic to automate your home.

iPhone Native App

Yes, it’s here by very popular demand! Indigo 4 (both Lite and Pro) includes compatibility with the free iPhone App called Indigo Touch. If you have an iPhone or iPod touch, then check out this best ever feature of the Indigo software. Read all about it on this Perceptive Automation page. You will be amazed at how seamlessly the App works with Indigo 4.

Are you at Starbucks the next morning and don’t remember if you turned off the lights at home before you left? No problem. Just click on Indigo Touch on your iPhone. It will connect and pull in your folders with the status of your lights or other devices as you wish.

Home Automation 101

Indigo communicates with X10 and INSTEON devices (like appliance or lamp modules) via one of the PowerLinc interfaces that is plugged into a normal home wall socket near your computer. The PowerLinc interfaces are USB devices that connect to your Mac and allow Indigo to both send and receive INSTEON (and/or X10) commands. Without a PowerLinc (or other interface like the CM11), there is obviously no way for Indigo to "hear" or send the commands on the power line. Therefore, you must have this hardware interface module along with your Indigo. See the comparison matrix link at the bottom of the page for more detail on the various interfaces.

With Indigo 4 you can:

  • Control lights, fans, appliances, etc., from a variety of handheld remote controls (including the INSTEON RemoteLinc)
  • Create schedules to automatically turn on or off devices even if you are not at home
  • Incorporate motion detectors to turn on lights or other devices
  • Automatically send emails based on events, like power failure or motion detection
  • Automatically turn on landscape or holiday lighting at sunset and off at sunrise
  • Create different lighting scenes, for example “Party,” “Movie,” “Sleeping,” “Away,” for perfect multi-room lighting levels at the touch of a button
  • Incredible flexibility for thousands of other uses -- use your imagination!

Two Protocols Supported: X10 and INSTEON

Indigo 4 uses very little resources on your Mac and most Indigo users choose to leave Indigo running 24/7 on their Mac in the background so they have the maximum control of their home. However, Indigo can upload its basic logic and your schedules to the INSTEON PowerLinc 2414U or the (X10 only) INSTEON PowerLinc 1132CU computer interface, providing a solution for users that cannot leave their Mac running all of the time. The PowerLinc 2414U and the PowerLinc Controller 1132CU have built-in clocks and basic logic capabilities, and can even be used to turn lighting on or off at sunset and sunrise transitions based on your specific geographical location.
NOTE: The PowerLinc Controller 2414U can send and receive power line commands to BOTH INSTEON and X10 devices. The PowerLinc Controller 1132CU can only communicate with X10 power line devices.

To communicate with both X10 and INSTEON compatible devices, Indigo interfaces with the INSTEON PowerLinc Controller (2414U) and the INSTEON PowerLinc Modem (2412U)sold on this site.

In Summary . . .

Here's a comparison matrix that shows the relationships/functionality that Indigo has with the various powerline interface controllers:
